Many factors can cause wear in electric motors, and the weather is one of the most important ones. Many producers do not take into account that the motor will be standing outdoors in harsh environment , which is often the case in Norway. Kollsnes, located near the open sea, this is a major problem. At Statoil’s facilities at Kollsnes, several motors are installed with the shaft flange upwards. This allows water to easily flow into the motor, as it is not sealed well enough. This eventually causes the motor to rust on the inside.
Karsten Moholt has received several motors of this type from Kollsnes and has designed a modified solution to the sealing problem.
